Deutsche Bahn is changing the game: Last-minute train tickets are coming

Deutsche Bahn is changing the game: last-minute train tickets are coming, and the German rail operator is introducing a new pricing model aimed at travellers who plan their trips at the last minute. This option will only be available when there are unsold seats left on trains.

Flexibility in response to market needs

German Rail On 9 May 2026, the test phase of a new ticketing model was successfully launched. The main aim of this initiative is to offer more affordable prices for those who must or wish to travel without long-term planning. This is a clear response to the growing demands of modern travellers for flexibility.

New direction in the pricing policy of German railways

This move represents a significant shift in the current strategy. German Railways, where the most favourable tickets were generally reserved for early bookings. Under the new system, last-minute tickets will only be available to purchase a few days before the train's departure. Naturally, the key prerequisite for activating these discounts will be the capacity utilisation on specific routes. This allows the operator to optimise the occupancy of their train sets and reduce the number of empty seats on less popular routes.

This approach to dynamic pricing could also prompt other European Rail operators on similar experiments with unsold capacity. Especially in the business and ad-hoc travel segment.
